Of course, we need to try to look at the good also, but there's seems little good in the story of the California missions. The Native Americas ended up without land and they suffered--for over 150 years--almost virtual imprisonment. The women must have feared rape all the time. <br /><br />This truly is a tale of slavery in California. I've always thought of slavery just happening in the South, but you've shown us, Inger, that it was also there in California and was just as cruel and dehumanizing. <br /><br />Thank you for this series thus far. Within one or two generations, the mission Indians had lost the knowledge and skills necessary to live off the land as had their ancestors.
