Dog Days Of Summer ~ August 2009

My 9th anniversary as a blogger inspired me to look back to my early posts. Mainly at the pictures, which helped bring back memories. Errol was in Los Angeles then, working. Samson was born at my BIL Keith's house on July 7th, but we didn't know him yet.

Our beloved hound-dog mix, Bandit, had died the year before and three dogs were living here with me:
  • Angel, the German shepherd
  • Soldier, the German shepherd cross
  • Princess, the Black Lab/Border Collie cross

Princess volunteered to blog, sharing a dog's perspective. Here she goes:

In the evenings, when we're all outside, we can get frisky and start a play fight. The picture above shows our different fighting techniques:

Soldier hangs on to the scruff of Angel's neck; I bite her hind legs (I'm part herding dog, so I know that from -- I think they call it -- instinct); and Angel puts her front leg on Soldier's shoulders so he can't move. These are all very good fighting tricks!

Here we are, friends again after our three-way dog-play/fight. It's only for fun and we really like to play together.

Blogged by me -- Princess!

Present time:
You remembered Soldier, some of you, in your comments on my Rust post. Soldier died in 2013. This, of course, means we've been friends for a long time. I'm so happy about that.

I feel like I want to sit down and write the story of his life with us. This is not the time, maybe some day. I think 12 dogs have lived me. All so very different and all so much loved. Maybe Soldier most of all because he was such a troubled soul.

  1. I remember Soldier very well, he was still with you when we met. He looks so much like our Max. Fond and precious memories, and I know they make you sad. I love to look at old photos and remember them just like my mother and dads photos. I think we miss our dogs more than the humans because they are our daily, 24/7 companions and they leave a huge gap in our lives...

  2. Looking at our old pictures helps our memories as to when things happened. I remember Soldier and Angel quite well. Not sure about Princess.(Maybe she was just past info that I retained?)

  3. Hi Inger - I remember Soldier ... and yes I've been here since before 2013. I too remember Angel, but definitely not Princess ... lovely photos and remembrances. Fun to read and see them playing ... all the best as you start your 10th year here ... cheers Hilary

  4. Isn't it amazing when we see pictures of our much love dogs who are no longer with us, for a moment they are right here once more. They are embedded in the fabric of our lives. Thank goodness for cameras.

    1. Thank you, it was yesterday's sunrise. Here, the sun has to climb over the eastern mountains and it makes for good photo ops. So glad you like the picture.

  7. I think Princess died in 2010, suddenly, from internal bleeding. I had to put her down. She probably had been sick for some time, but she was a very stoic dog and I didn't realize. Errol rescued her from here, she came here in 2005. Her ownder we later learned lived in the mountains above us. She had left Princess alone for two weeks and gone on a trip. I guess Princess stayed for a while, but got hungry and decided to find a better home. She tried the Donkey Rescue without success, then came here when Errol and Glenn were working on the house. She ran after the truck when they drove off, so Errol stopped and took her in.

  8. Dogs and cats hide an illness so well. And each one leaves a gap even after all these years. Love that new photo, sunlight and shadows, beautiful.

  10. Princess was quite a good blogger... she made me smile and laugh. It's touching how you loved Soldier perhaps most of all because "he was such a troubled soul".

  11. I've read every comment. I only have known of your life since Faith was a puppy. and of course Samson.
but I too am a dog lover and I shed tears all through this beautiful post. especially when Errol rescued Princess.
it always amazes me how anyone could simply drive off and leave a part of the family like the mountain person did. just as if she were a piece of furniture to discard. I've had dogs all my life. there is nothing like their devotion and friendship.
and I love the new banner header! it's so beautiful!

  15. Dear Inger, like "tammy j," I read every comment and remembered--along with your other readers--Soldier and Angel. I began blogging in 2011 and reading your blog the same year. I remember that my love of cats and your love of dogs drew us together. We knew they were the deepest of blessings in our lives. We knew also how privileged we were that they chose to spend their lives with us. Now Samson and Faith know the blessing of your presence and you, theirs. And I know the joy of Ellie, Maggie, and Matthew. They are the soul of our homes. Peace.
