Walking

The pulmonary nurse practitioner said I must use my inhaler and walk to avoid progressive lung disease. Enough to kind of scare me straight. To walking more.

I've love my walks and thought I still always walk. But once I really thought about it, I found I do not. Not really, just short walks.

I know this is due to issues with my lungs. Damn cigarettes, I haven't smoked since 1993, and now I can't walk. My legs are fine, I skated all my young life, on hockey skates, I rode horses, I walked and hiked.

Because my land is hilly and in the mountains, my lungs get more of a workout than if I were to walk on the beach. Still, my walks were not long.

So I decided to get serious, I have my pedometer in my pocket and will try to walk every day. Inside if the weather is really bad.

I'm focusig on building up my endurance.

The other day, I walked in a snowstorm, not one of soft large snowflakeds, but of small and stingy ones, with a cold, strong wind lashing at my face, turning my cheeks bright red.

This was the best, most invigorating walk I've had in years.

This is how coyotes walk. It's hard to imagine four paws made this straight line, isn't it?

  1. HOpe you are walking today. I think I commented here yesterday but don't see it.

  2. Could have sworn I commented yesterday too--maybe a glitch. I feel your pain for I too quit cigarettes in 1976 and still ended up with lung problems. Do keep walking as it really is helpful for your lungs.

  3. I also commented yesterday, twice as a matter of fact. I hope Inger is OK and it's just a computer glitch.

  7. Lovely idea to have a pedometer, that should motivate anyone to walk more, does slow walking count? or do you have to set up what is called " A cracking pace?" Slow and steady would do me down here, and hope you don't meet a stray coyote on the way.

  9. Well, every little bit helps. And you are determined, so that is good. Be sure and take your inhaler with you. So will the coyotes ever come up to people?

  11. Dear Inger, congratulations! It's so inspiring that you are walking given your lung/breathing problems. In the Frank Bruni book I'm reading, he quotes a college professor he had years ago who said, "All of life is adjusting to loss." And that's what both of us are learning now. You do so inspire me. Peace.

  12. Tell me how far you walk when you 'walk'? I have COPD and asthma but nobody has told me to walk. I find that I get less and less keen to go for proper walks in winter and I often find myself out of breath when I am just walking for 10 minutes. Maybe we should form a 'walkers group' and urge each other on.
    Good luck Inger.
