Hubby's Start Up Garden

Last year, the last snow came on May 26. After that we thought we could plant our plants in the garden. Wrong! A frost in early June killed them all. The seeds we planted were OK, but the June chill killed the plants. So this year, hubby has a starter garden. He has been so good about taking care of his plants for the past several weeks. They stay outside during the day and he brings them in at night. The plants have grown by leaps and bounds and were recently transferred to larger planters. I took these pictures about a week ago and now many more cherry tomatoes are bright red and the peppers are getting large fast. We haven't done any work on our "real" garden at all. And it has been so much warmer than last year. But then we are behind on everything, so I'm sure it will all work out.

  3. It's funny for me to think you get snow in May...in California... I though that we in Alberta where the only ones:)... We do have our garden planted....but temps are still low...then we get frost end of August often...so I can't plant all the yummy things I would like too....and yes it all seems to work out...

  8. The starter garden looks great.
We have experienced the same angst about whether to plant or not. Generally our average last day of frost is June 1.
We have used 'Walls of Water' quite successfully with our tomatoes and peppers. In fact, we have 5 tomatoes that have been in the ground for almost 3 weeks and we just added some with peppers yesterday.
The water absorbs the heat during the day and keeps the interior warm at night.

  14. Very cool garden, Inger! With the weird weather you have to coddle everything. Nice that you have a ripe cherry tomato already and that pepper is begging to be picked!

  15. We didn't start a garden yet. Good thing; we had frost last night. But we're in Canada, and sometimes these things happen up here.

Of course, before we start a garden, we need a garden plot. And right now, those are about as common as hens teeth, here in River City.

Good luck to hubby with his project! I'm sure you're proud of him, aren't you.

  16. I so envy your cool weather but it does make gardening a challenge. Seems your hubby had found the answer plus getting in some weight training at the same time. Win/win.

  17. I'm glad you like my hubby's project. The weather is getting hot, actually, but we don't feel safe with the night time temps quite yet.
