Theme ~ My 50 Years in America
Overcoming, as in We Shall Overcome
I believe we are on our way, here in America, to overcome ourselves in a way that I had not thought possible 50 years ago. President Kennedy said this:
We can help make the world safe for diversity
For in the final analysis our most basic common link
is that we all inhabit this small planet....
We all breathe the same air,
We all cherish our children's future
And we are all mortal.
John F. Kennedy, 1917 - 1963
I love that quote. People are all the same, no matter where they come from. Basically, we all want peace in our lives and a future for our children.
ReplyDeleteI want to believe, and then tragedies like Boston interrupt my view of where we are as evolving humans. A wonderful, inspiring quote. Thanks for holding up a candle in the darkness.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and timely. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI always admired that part speech by your president he did care about mankind. B
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Great words of hope and promise for the human race, that we might reflect on more so now in these troubled times.
ReplyDeleteLove and peace!
Very inspiring quote. I especially love "we all breath the same air." So simple and yet so powerful.
ReplyDeleteIt's one of my favorite quotes. And how true it is.
ReplyDeleteI tied in today's post with Boston.
there are many things that are better now than then, and many that are not.
ReplyDeleteI had been married one month to the day the year he was killed. talk about a shocking thing to happen. but a lot of good came from it and our country is so much more accepting of each other than it was then. there has always been evil in this world and always will be... there is nothing new under the sun, as King Solomon said in the bible
deep breath...sigh...
ReplyDeleteI sat here at 5 a.m.PT this morning with no ideas for my O post. Feeling really down after the bombing in Boston and the letters, just like after 9/11, I flipped through this book I have and came upon the quote. And I knew we have overcome so much.
ReplyDeleteI needed that. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteCat
Thank you for that wonderful--& very true--quote!!
ReplyDeleteInger
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he knew where we were headed and wanted to make it better.
That's lovely, Inger. I'd never read or heard that before.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
That's a great quote. I love the last line especially. I've been working on the word Impermanence this year, so the word mortal really makes me think.
ReplyDeleteThat might be my new favorite quote. Getting along should be so simple. Why do we make it so complicated?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure we have a long way to go, but yes, we have come a long way, too. We saw the new movie, "42"--the story of Jackie Robinson's career in major league baseball...great movie to refresh our memories of segregation and racism in America. I highly recommend.
ReplyDeleteLovely JFK quote--and oh so true, I believe! oxo Debra
We shall overcome!
ReplyDeleteBlessings and Bear hugs!

Nu har jag läst ikapp några inlägg jag inte hunnit med...Vilket äventyr...vad du har sett massa i USA
ReplyDeleteWe should probably be required to read this quote more often. Great job, Inger.
ReplyDeleteAwesome quote. I hadn't read that before. Totally right on. Great post.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, Inger!
ReplyDeleteSo much truth in that quote!
ReplyDeleteGreat quote and nice post :) Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteHej Inger!
Lasse
The civil rights movement had to be one of the most altering movements in USA's history; yet its not commented on enough - thank you for bringing this to the front!
ReplyDeletetheres still a lot of work to be done, but I think with each generation there will be a mutual understanding that we may all look different but we still all have the same "heart" inside...
"...And we are all mortal." That says it all.
ReplyDeleteLovely! Especially for today Inger (Friday) so much going on in your country now. My thoughts are with you.
ReplyDeleteVery inspirational post by an extraordinary human being.
Hi Inger .. we inhabit this small planet - and we are all the same ... and we all need to work with the planet not against it, or against ourselves ..
ReplyDeleteWe shall overcome ... Hilary
with vigilance though!
